Spring 2024 Raku Workshop

$595.00
sold out

Join Melodie for a Raku Pottery workshop April 5th-6th 2024.

Experience the ancient art of raku pottery in this two day, semi-private intensive. We will focus on traditional raku methods that include firing both copper and crackle glazed wares. Participants will meet Friday, April 5th from 6:00-8pm at Melodie’s home studio to glaze two pieces and discuss form and glaze. The learning continues Saturday, April 6th, from 10am-4pm as the group gathers to fire their glazed pots and gain firsthand experience with raku kiln equipment and specifics, setup, post firing reduction, cleaning, sealing, etc. best practices. We will take a 45 minute break for a brown bag lunch.

Each participant should bring with them two bisque fired pots no more than 4”w x 6” tall made of Standard 239 raku clay, or they may purchase pre-made bisqueware from Melodie on Friday night. In addition to two bisque fired pieces, it is recommended students bring a notebook and pen for note taking. Registration is $595

Students are required to wear closed toe shoes (leather is recommended), long pants and long sleeves, preferably made of cotton or other natural fiber (avoid synthetics that may melt). Long hair must be tied back, no dangling jewelry. There must be a minimum of three registrants to make the workshop. In the case of rain, gusting wind, or inclement weather, the workshop will be held the following weekend.

This is a hands on, interactive workshop dealing with unpredictable and potentially hazardous elements such as open flame and smoke. Appropriate safety precautions will be taken and provided by the instructor. Students participate at their own risk.
